PORT HURON, MI – The Fort Wayne Komets scored two goals in the last three minutes of play on Sunday to pull ahead in a tied game and defeat the Port Huron Icehawks by a final score of 4-2 at McMorran Arena.

The loss was the third in a row for the Icehawks, who started off the week with a big 6-1 win over the same Komets on Tuesday before going on to lose one goal games on Wednesday and Saturday. The three game losing streak is the longest the Icehawks have seen this season. The Icehawks fall to 28-12-0-3 but remain in second place in the International Hockey League standings, four points behind the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

The Icehawks entered the third period trailing 2-1, but tied the game at the 17:19 mark with a goal by Tab Lardner on assists from Mike Kinnie and Brandon Kaleniecki. The tie lasted only seconds, however, as the Komets regained the lead with the eventual game winner from Kaleigh Schrock at 17:24. Fort Wayne added another goal at 18:45, this one off the stick of Matt Syroczynski on an assist from Schrock. The Icehawks outshot the Komets 20-13 in the third period and 39-34 overall.

The Komets skated to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of first period goals from Leo Thomas. Thomas’ first of the night and 17th of the season came on the power play at 7:03 and was assisted by Justin Chwedoruk and Frankie DeAngelis. Thomas added another goal just under two minutes later, this time shorthanded. P.C. Drouin assisted on the second goal. The Komets outshot the Icehawks 12-11 in the first period.

The Icehawks cut the deficit to one in the second period with a power play goal from Brandon Naurato at 9:31. Mike Kinnie and Daniel Tetrault assisted on the play. Fort Wayne held a 9-8 shots advantage in the second frame.

Icehawks goalie Adam Russo made 30 saves in the loss, while Komets goalie Nick Boucher turned away 37 shots. The Icehawks were 1-5 on the power play and the Komets were 1-4.

The Icehawks embark on a three game road trip next week. The stint begins in Quad City on Wednesday and continues with a rematch in Fort Wayne on Friday and a game in Dayton on Saturday. Port Huron will return home on Friday, February 12.
